Jordan or LeBron?

Six rings and a perfect Finals record on one side. The all-time scoring record and two decades at the top on the other. The argument every barbershop in America has already had, argued properly this time.

The case for

Michael Jordan

Chicago Bulls · 1984–1998 (and a Wizards coda)

  • 6–0Six Finals, six rings, six Finals MVPs. Never needed a Game 7 in the Finals.
  • 10Scoring titles. Nobody else has more than seven. He also won Defensive Player of the Year.
  • 30.1Career points per game, the highest in league history, across regular season and playoffs.
vs
The case for

LeBron James

Cleveland · Miami · Cleveland · Los Angeles · 2003–

  • No. 1All-time leading scorer, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 2023, while also sitting top five in assists.
  • 10Finals appearances, including eight straight. Four rings with three different franchises.
  • 20+Seasons at an All-NBA level. Nobody has carried a peak this long, in any sport.

The verdict

It's Jordan, and it's closer than his fans admit.

The GOAT question is really two questions wearing one coat. If you mean who was the best basketball player at his best, it's Jordan, and it isn't close: six Finals, six wins, six Finals MVPs, a two-way peak nobody has matched. If you mean who had the greatest career, LeBron's case is real: the scoring record, ten Finals, two decades of being the best player on whatever floor he walked onto.

We think "greatest" has to mean the first question. Championships are the sport's own scoreboard, and Jordan never lost on it. But the gap is a few possessions wide, not a canyon. Anyone who says this is a blowout either way isn't arguing, they're cheering.

Disagree? That's what the buttons are for.
