Shower in the morning or at night?

Wake up with hot water and start fresh, or wash the day off and get into bed clean. Dermatologists and sleep researchers have opinions. So does everyone you've ever lived with.

The case for

At night

Wash the day off, sleep clean

  • SleepA warm shower an hour before bed drops your core temperature afterwards, which helps you fall asleep. The research is consistent.
  • SheetsEverything the day put on you (pollen, sweat, the subway) stays out of the bed.
  • MorningsTen minutes back. The alarm can go later, and the morning is for coffee.

The case for

In the morning

Wake up, reset, go

  • AwakeHot water, then cold, is the most reliable way to wake up that doesn't come in a cup.
  • HairMorning showers win for anyone whose hair has to look like something by nine.
  • FreshYou sweat in your sleep. The morning shower is the one that leaves the house clean.

The verdict

It's Night, and the sleep science is why.

Morning people have a real point about waking up and about hair, and if your job needs you presentable at eight, the morning shower earns its place.

But the night shower does more: it helps you sleep, keeps the day's grime out of your bed, and hands you back ten minutes of morning. Shower at night, rinse in the morning if you must. Night.
